There are many studies pertaining to the
benefits of aromatherapy for one’s wellbeing. The easiest among all studies are
those that involves electrical rhythms of the human brain—the alpha waves and
the beta waves. Alpha waves are usually dominant during meditation and other
states when the brain is relaxed. Beta waves, on the other hand, are associated
with the alert state of the brain. It is also a sign depicting apprehension and
anxiety.
According to some Japanese researchers,
inhaling sandalwood and lavender helps in increasing the alpha wave activity of
the brain. While when a person inhales jasmine oil, the beta wave activity of
the brain increases. The researchers from Toho University School of Medicine in
Tokyo, Japan also provided supporting results by measuring the brain waves’
upward shifts. Through the measurements show that inhaled jasmine can produce a
stimulating effect that is similar to that of when inhaling coffee. On the
other hand, East Indian sandalwood oil gives a calming effect.
